Quechua is spoken by some 30 million people in a number of varieties in
Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, Argentina (northern), and a tiny bit in Chile. It
is also, now, spoken by immigrants in all the large cities of the world.
Quechua of Ecuador is know as Quichua. The other pricipal varieties are
those of Huancayo (Wanka), of northern Peru, and that of Southern Peru
and Bolivia. The Cuzco variety and the Cochabamba are the most well
documented, together with some materials on the Puno variety. These three
are closely related.
For awhile Quechua was an official language of Peru; this caused a great
deal of material to be produced.
